Pink Chameleon

Based in the not too distant future, the "Silk Sisters" trilogy kicks off with the brilliant "Pink Chameleon". This is Rorie's, 12, and her younger sister, 7, Elsie's story. The sisters live happily with their slightly eccentric parents - both inventors - and their pet chameleon, Arthur Clarkson. One ordinary morning, the parents set off to a meeting to sell their latest, and most exciting invention, but, mysteriously, they never arrive at their destination. Rorie and Elsie are put in the guardianship of their dour uncle and aunt - both of whom run a repressed and imposing boarding school - Pokerbute Hall. When the sisters can take no more of their cruel uncle and aunt and the torturously boring school, they make a bid for freedom and run away - in search of their parents - and discover that their adventure has only just begun... This story has all the magic and adventure of the "Truth Cookie" trilogy, with Fiona's signature cinematic writing and real heroes and villains - and is sure to delight and enthral readers everywhere!

    Hi there!
I really like your book, but I have one question!
Why does your book called the pink chameleon? I understand why you called it chameleon, but i don’t understand the pink part! I think you’re really great when you answer on my question, because this question is very important to me!
    Kiss & Hugs,
    Rosie

  2. Louise Said:

    Hi,
I started reading your books back in 2009. I was 10 and I was in love with them. I hadn’t read them in a while and about a month ago I decided to read it again. It is a really great book and I can imagine it being a really successful movie. I think that lots of people would watch it because of its different but interesting storyline and great characters. if it was made into a movie I really want to be Rorie because I am a similar age and I wish I had her powers. Also I want to be an actress. anyway you are a really great writter and if people are making a movie could you E-mail me because I want to audition! also I am a similar age to Rorie and I look like her sort of.thanks for writting these book because they’re really great!
Has anyone ever told you that they are a bit similar to Scott Westerfields Uglies series because I think they are :)
    Thanks
    Louise <3

  3. Mimi Said:

Hey! I’m Mimi. I go to Earl-ham Primary School! Do you remember the time when you visited us in our school? i brought the silk sisters Pink and am reading it now! i couldn’t get a signed book, but hopefully next time!

  4. Hi Fiona!

I have just started reading Pink Chameleon and am loving it!

What is your favourite author? (apart from yourself!!!).
Mine would have to be Michael Morpurgo because of his descriptive langauge.

  5. Hannah R Said:

    Hi,

I haven’t read any of the Silk Sisters books but I might be getting one for my birthday!
and do you think they are as good as the legendary Kitty Slade books?

Oh yeah and give credit to the GirlTalk magazine for the advert about your books, and thats how I discovered you!

    • FionaDunbar Said:

Yay for GirlTalk magazine! DO read the Silk Sisters books: they are definitely as good as the Kitty Slade ones – if anything, better, because it’s one long story told over three books, so it’s more substantial and complex. Not to mention, downright WEIRD! :-)

  6. Emma Said:

Hey Fiona! I Have Decided To Order Your Book Pink Chamaleon. I Have Decided To Get It Because Of All Of The Posotive Comments All Of The Reviews Have Said! In Fact, They Are All At least 5 Or 4 Star!! So Before I Start Reading, I Was Wondering Where You Got The Inspiration From To Write These Books :p

  7. Rosie Said:

These books are amazing. Would they ever be made into films?

  8. Kat Said:

So over the last week I’ve been reading Pink Chameleon. It used to be sitting there on the shelf, I don’t know where or when we got it. It was there though.
So I decided after needing something to read, I’d give in and read it. And you know what? I really enjoyed it.
I’m not sure what age group it’s aimed at, I’m sure anyone can read it though, I happen to be a teen. It’s a great read and I’d like to read the others and complete this mystery.

I think it’d be a good movie, not like a big film. Maybe a television movie or spread out as a series in episodes. Shame you haven’t had offers. There’s always hope.
Keep writing, reading, and loving fashion.

    • FionaDunbar Said:

Hi Kat, here’s the thing about ‘reading ages’: they can be very helpful in guiding adults towards the right books for their children, but other than that they can be largely ignored. A good book is a good book. I’m delighted you enjoyed Pink Chameleon; I know plenty of adults who have enjoyed it too! And the rest of the trilogy. Re: television/film: I agree: I am very visual, and my writing has been described as ‘cinematic’, which I take as a compliment. Sometimes it takes years for something to reach the screen; I think the Silk Sisters are still enough of a minority interest to qualify for ‘cult’ status! But who knows? Word of mouth can be a powerful thing. My publishers are currently thinking about re-jacketing the trilogy; this is interesting, and could perhaps bring it to a whole new audience.

Anyway, DO read books 2 & 3, and let me know what you think of them! It all gets bigger and weirder as things go along…

  9. Rachel Said:

What I meant Fiona, was if there was Silk Sisters film, which celebrities would you like to play Rorie and Elsie? Thanks :-)

    • FionaDunbar Said:

Well I think that as they’re so young, they’d have to be played by unknowns! But I think Nicole Kidman would make a great Nolita!

  10. Hannah Said:

Hi Fiona! If you could invite all your characters from all your books to a dinner party, how do you think they would react to one another? :)

    • FionaDunbar Said:

Hi Hannah, wow, what an unusual question! Well, Rorie & Elsie are from the future, so they would have to time-travel, but I think they’d enjoy meeting Kitty and Lulu if they did! I’m not sure how Varaminta and Nolita would get on; they’d probably be enormously charming to each other, then be horrible about each other behind their backs. Uncle Harris and Aunt Ermine would sit stiffly at the end and not talk to anyone. Cassandra would have everyone enthralled…ah, I could go on! Any thoughts of your own?

  11. heidi Said:

yay i have got pink chameleon! all i need now is to actualy buy blue gene baby and tiger lily gold and ill know whats going on so far. are there any more coming out or are there just going to be three. i wouldn’t know cos i have not read tiger lily gold yet

  12. Annie Paul-Baig Said:

Hi Fiona. omg im hooked on your books, my favorites being the silk sisters trilogy! these books are so entrapping, i can never put the down! im readin Blue Gene Baby at the moment! its AMAZING!

  13. Rachel Said:

Hi Fiona! I have a question. If you were to relate a celebrity with Rorie and Elsie (Example: Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus etc.) Who would it be?

    • FionaDunbar Said:

Hi Rachel, I’m not sure I understand the question, I’m afraid! In Silk Sisters I am quite scathing about celebrity culture…do you mean, who do I think Rorie and Elsie would like?

      • Rachel Said:

Hi Fiona, sorry if I didn’ t phrase my question clearly. What I mean is would you be able to relate certain celebrity personalities to your characters for example, an eccentric character could be similar to Lady Gaga or a sassy character could be like Beyonce. Rachel :)

  14. Hannah Said:

Hi Fiona, Thank you form the comment. Best wishes! xxx

  15. Shantelle Said:

I have just this minute finished Pink Chameleon and I am now reading Blue Gene Baby. I’m hoping to order Tiger-lily Gold. I’m 11 and find these books amusing! I’m only on page 68 Chapter 7 – Secret Weapon. From the things i’ve resd so far in Pink Chameleon – with Moll especially- I’d say that it was there uncle robbing people of their identities! I can’t wait to read the rest. By the was, is there any other books or is it just the three?

  16. Straeten Said:

    Hi Fiona!!!!
I’m a huge fan!!!! I’ve read The Truth Cookie, which I couldn’t put down:), pink chameleon and blue gene baby- just started tiger lily gold last night. I am obsessed with the silk sisters!!!:) I love them! I can’t stop reading! Well, are working on any new projects or do you have plans for a new book or series? Happy Holidays!
    From Straeten
P.S. My name is pronounced stra-tin:)

  17. hannah Said:

H i Fiona Dunbar, I read the silk sisters trilogy at a local libray, I read “Pink chameleon first, then I waited for “Blue gene baby” and when my mum’s e-mail sand it had arrived and so I read it. Lastly, before my school play In March I got “Tiger lily gold” and I have to wait a long time to read the other two books. I finshed reading the silk sisters and I hope I can read these books again soon. xxx :-)

  18. heidi Said:

wow i love these books. even though im only just half way through blue gene baby. fashion world is amaizing x1,000,000. you have such wonderful ideas its incredable! im gonna get out tiger lily gold next because my libary for some reason do NOT have the first of any books. sure they have the others but NEVER the first. ist so anoying and i look every time. i also realy like elsie. 1. because elsie is one of my favorit names along with eliza, alice and connie. 2. becuse she is so creative. and 3. she is very individual in a good way.

    • FionaDunbar Said:

Thanks Heidi – I love Elsie too! She made me laugh when I was writing her. She is utterly self-centred, but then she is only seven. How frustrating about your library though! Would have been more satisfying for you to read the books in the right order. I hope you get to read Pink Chameleon eventually – then you can start all over again! :-)

  19. holly Said:

i am nearly finished pink chameleon.but im a bit not happy because because my librarian has order tiger-lily for me but i want to read blue baby first . :(

    • FionaDunbar Said:

That makes no sense at all! Why has she (or he) singled out one book from the trilogy as being ‘unsuitable’? How maddening! Btw best to keep the comment thread in one place; just hit ‘reply’, right below this message; thanks.

  20. holly Said:

    10 i am 11 at christmas

  21. holly Said:

is blue baby gene for teenagers thats what my liabarian said

    • FionaDunbar Said:

Your librarian is wrong. How old are you, Holly? ALL my books can be read by anyone old enough to understand them; there is nothing unsuitable for younger readers in there. I am quite annoyed that a librarian should make such an assumption, on no basis whatsoever.

  22. Aiman Said:

Hi Fiona, I am a big big fan of yours and I am completly in love with everything you have wrote, especially the Lulu Baker Triology! I adore your use of imagination, and I would recomend this book to anyone from the ages 9 to 99! I have read all the books in the Lulu Baker Triology and Tiger Lily Gold in the Silk Sisters Triology left! I am in year 9 and I had to do an a English exam based on my favorite author (you) and i followed your video that you made on Youtube about IDEAS and i got a A* for it, all thanks to you! I have always had a quiery about the Silk Sisters , have you made a movie on it? love you Fiona! xxxxxxx

    • FionaDunbar Said:

Aiman, what a lovely comment, thank you so much! I’m delighted that you watched my little video – it was very tongue-in-cheek! I should do more, really. Well done for getting an A*!

Re: Silk Sisters movie: alas, no offers yet. But it would make a good one, don’t you think?

I hope you enjoy my Kitty Slade books as much as Lulu Baker & Silk Sisters. :-)

  23. holly Said:

me again . do you think my liabrary will have any of your books
    :P

  24. holly Said:

    hey i love pink chameleon
do you have any other books besides the silk sisters
    :)

  25. Kukua Said:

Hi! I’m using Blue Gene Baby for my school reading report. I just started reading Cupid Cakes and I love it. I’m even using Tiger Lily Gold for my Drama presentation.
P.S – The writing tips page is really helpful. I was going to write a story like yours for my homework (because we had to write something inspired by your favourite author, but I decided to base it on your Author’s Notes at the beginning of each book. Plus, I got an A for it.

    • FionaDunbar Said:

Hi Kukua, hey that’s brilliant! Well done you. So that’s three different things you’re doing, influenced by my work. Wow! I’m really pleased you found my writing tips page so helpful. Thank you so much for letting me know about all this, and congrats for the A grade! :-)

  26. Sophie Said:

hey i just finished pink chameleon and it is the best book i have ever red even though i have only red 3 full books (including this one) but it is definatly the best
    (:

  27. Rosemary Said:

My best friend is called Fiona!!!

  28. Rosemary Said:

My friend gave me Blue Gene Baby to read and it was so awesome!! I was like “Wow”. I so loved the idea of being able to change into someone else. I’ve ordered the other two books. Can’t Wait!!
P.s- Fiona Bunbar why is the second book called Blue Gene Baby. In the book I didn’t read anything about a baby

    • FionaDunbar Said:

Hi Rosemary, Great! Thaks so much…glad you enjoyed it so much! Although it’s the second book in the trilogy, I’m sure you’ll enjoy Pink Chameleon (the 1st one) just as much.

The title refers to Rorie: the ‘baby’ part is kind of a double-meaning, in that it could mean baby in the way it’s used in the sort of songs Elvis Presley sang, or it could refer to the transformation – it’s as if she’s a child version of him. Child, not baby, it’s true – but it worked better for the title!

Btw I’m sure you didn’t mean to call me Fiona ‘Bunbar’ – at least you didn’t put an ‘m’ in there as well!

  29. Sarah Said:

The Silk Sisters had really been through a lot… They are really independent and does not rely on anyone! :) I really hope that they find their parents in the end.

  30. samadhi Said:

hi these books are amazing! after reading ‘the series of unfortunate events’ I’ve been searching for a book like this…i’m glad i found it. im trying to find the next book in the library! are you gonna write more books?

  31. Prisca Said:

The Silk Sisters are so awesome.I love the way Rorie can change into other people, like a chameleon! :)

  32. Rachel Said:

The Silk Sisters should be movies! You make them so cinematic and visual! I’m an eleven year old fan!Im going to try and write my own story, inspired by the Silk Sisters. Are you doing more with the Silk Sisters?

    Thanx!

    • FionaDunbar Said:

Hi Rachel, well, naturally I agree with you! I think that of all my books, The Silk Sisters are the most cinematic – they’d make fab graphic novels too, I think. I’d make them myself if I had another life… Sorry, but I have no plans to write more Silk Sisters books. I do feel the story is complete as it is. But I hope you enjoy my other books! :-)

  33. fiona Said:

i read the first chapter of pink chameleon on this website and thought it was BRILLIANT!!!!

i told my friend about it and she went and bought it!! and said she loved it!
    anyway seeya from Fiona Bye!!

  34. FionaDunbar Said:

Hi Lillian, it is absolutely not too young! Go ahead and do your report; there is a lot to discuss. And make sure you read the interview here on my website about the Silk Sisters; that may prompt some further thoughts of your own. It is a very interesting and complex book, if I say so myself! Go for it. :-)

  35. Lillian Said:

Hey, so i read blue gene baby and loved it! However im 13 and want to do it as a report for english im in year 9 will the teacher think this book is to childish?

  36. Katy Said:

These books are amazing ! I’ve read The Silk Sisters Gene blue baby , where they go to minimerica and theres a magical statue of liberty ! I’d like Tiger Lily gold for christmas ! Are you ever going to write about how they save their parents ?

    • FionaDunbar Said:

      Hi Katy

Well, I think you’d better go ahead and read Tiger-Lily Gold to find out about that! I’m glad you enjoyed Blue Gene Baby so much: I had a blast writing that one, as you can tell! Maybe you can even go back to Pink Chameleon as well, find out about the beginning of the story. Happy reading! :-)

  37. wizzy Said:

i have just finshed reading pink chameleon it was really good. i love the ending. and i have just orderd the other two books.

PS. i recomeded this book to the school libary and i hope they like it like i did

  38. Starina Said:

I love books two & three. I borrowed them from the library so i didnt manage to get the first version look forward to reading the first version(if i can find it) :)

  39. Starina Said:

I want to know where the book Pink Chameleon is sold is it sold in Singapore? I really want to buy it if it is sold in Singapore do you know which stores sell it?

  40. Jess Said:

in Blue gene Baby lisa simms is chasing rorie and elsie on a jet ski with nikki deeds how come lisa simms is suddly so good at sport when she jumps the jet ski

    hope that makes sense

    • FionaDunbar Said:

      Hi Jess

I don’t think jumping off a jet ski requires great sporting skills. She is forced to do this or crash into the rocks: we do not know how she fared. For all we know, she may have been badly injured! Hope that explains it. You forgot to say whether you liked the book.

  41. Chloé Said:

    Hello,
I loved the Pink Chameleon, I finished it today! When I read the last page, I was like, “…What?!” I only later found out there are two more books! I’m so excited and can’t wait to read them!! I am reeeeally intrigued to find out what happens next! Why are the girls at the boarding school acting strange? What happened to Moll? And where are the parents? Can’t waaait! I might even read Pink Chameleon again!!!

    • FionaDunbar Said:

Hi Chloe, thanks and I’m delighted you enjoyed it so much. I hope you aren’t kept in suspense for too much longer! Yup, there are answers to all those questions and more…and I’m confident in saying you won’t have predicted any of it! Enjoy books two & three. :-)

  42. FionaDunbar Said:

    Hi Claire,

Thanks so much for a fabulous review – feel free to post the same message on Amazon! Absolutely brilliant that it kept you up all night – though I hope it wasn’t a school night! You’re in for a treat, I reckon, because things get even more exciting in books two & three…hope you get them soon. :-)

  43. Claire Said:

I have just finished the first silk sisters book, and thought it was thrilling! The story is much more exciting than it sounds on the back of the book, and kept me up all night reading! I thought the plot of Rorie absorbing chameleon powers and being able to change bodies was very imaginative, and the story was fast-paced, easy to read and interesting. Thanks for writing such a good book!

  44. FionaDunbar Said:

Hi Emily Oh, well, what a nice surprise for you! There are definitely a LOT of loose ends to tie up in the last book! Thanks so much for letting me know how much you enjoy my books, and I hope you enjoy reading Tiger-Lily Gold. :-)

  45. Emily Said:

    Hello,
I have read Pink chameleon and blue gene baby i thought it was the end but there is another book!I can’t wait to read it hope they find there parents.I am a big fan of your books and i have read truth cookie, cupid cakes and chocolate wishes. Your writing is brilliant and i hope your next books are twice as good! xxx

  46. FionaDunbar Said:

Hi Louise, and thanks so much for telling me! Personally, I think the Silk Sisters books just get better and better – but I would say that, wouldn’t I? ;-) Hope you enjoy them.

  47. Louise Cyris Said:

I have just finished reading Pink Chameleon and i loved it! i have just ordered the other two books of the series and can’t wait to start reading them:) i hope you carry on writing books like this one. Louise x

  48. FionaDunbar Said:

Hi Kinza! Thank you so much for telling me how much you enjoyed this book – and I’m delighted you’ve been spreading the word, too! I hope your teacher enjoyed it.

Have you read the other two Silk Sisters books? If not, do try and get hold of them! You say that Pink Chameleon has a good ending – and I agree, of course! – but it’s not the absolute end of the story, because Rorie and Elsie still haven’t found their parents. Read them! Then let me know what you think :-)

  49. Kinza Said:

I love your book Pink Chameleon , Its so good i dont know how many ppl i advised to read it. I also chose “pink Chameleon” as my school book oral report and my teacher read it later as well. I love the ending as well… it has a good moral.:)

  50. FionaDunbar Said:

Hi Stephanie! Sorry: only just seen this comment – still getting used to my new site. Fashionworld is a virtual environment: when Rorie and Elsie get into the special chairs and put on the headsets, they are plunged into a sort of video game, but it’s one where you feel you are right inside a 3-dimensional environment. Does that make sense? There’s a fuller explanation here: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/gadgets/other-gadgets/virtual-reality.htm Many people think we’ll have this in the not-too-distant future.

Nolita’s chatroom is a little simpler: it’s like talking to people on Skype, only instead of looking at them on a flat screen, you see a sort of hologram of them, sitting in the room with you.

    I hope that’s all clear!

  51. Stephanie Fairey Said:

Okay, so I really want to know more about is Fashionworld and Nolita’s VIP chatroom- both of which are mentioned in Blue Gene Baby.
